
Peru is a naturally diverse country and its rivers play an essential role in its ecology, culture and economy. Amazon River
We begin with the Amazon River, recognized as the largest and longest river in the world. With a length of approximately 7,062 kilometers, part of its course crosses Peru, Colombia and Brazil before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to its impressive length, it also has the largest hydrographic basin in the world, providing life to its vast jungle environment, where incredible biodiversity can be found.
In Peru, the Amazon flows mainly through the Loreto region. This section of the river is a major tourist destination, especially the city of Iquitos, from where you can visit the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and observe the local wildlife, including pink river dolphins, caimans, piranhas, and a great diversity of birds. Another remarkable aspect of the Amazon is the variation in its width. During the low-water season, it can be between 1,6 and 10 kilometers wide, and during the rainy season, its width can expand to more than 45 kilometers. Its average flow rate is approximately 209,000 cubic meters per second, making it the most voluminous river on the planet.
The Amazon is also known for its history, as it was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci, the first European to navigate its waters in 1499, and Francisco de Orellana, who was the first to descend the river from the Andes.
Ucayali River
The Ucayali River is another of the Peruvian river giants. It is one of the main tributaries that, when it joins the Marañón River, forms the Amazon. This river, identified as the longest in Peru, stretches for 1,771 kilometers. Historically, Francisco de Salinas Loyola discovered it in 1577, and its basin is home to exotic species such as the pink river dolphin, the giant otter, and the Amazonian manatee. The Ucayali originates at the confluence of the Tambo (159 km) and Urubamba (862 km) rivers, its most distant source being the Apurímac River. Navigation on this river is relatively common for transporting goods and people, and its main ports are located in Pucallpa, Atalaya, and Contamana. Furthermore, it is an area of great biodiversity, as is the entire Amazonian region.
The Ucayali basin is also home to many endemic animal and plant species., and many of its tributaries, such as the Pachitea River and the Aguaytía River, contribute significantly to the flow of the Amazon.

Marañón River
The Marañón River is another of Peru’s most important water sources. Its source is located in the province of Lauricocha, in the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 5,800 meters above sea level, where it flows through the snow-capped peaks of the Raura Range. This river is known for being one of the main tributaries that form the Amazon River. Stretching approximately 1,707 kilometers, the Marañón traverses mountainous landscapes and lowland rainforests. Its upper course is characterized by its powerful and turbulent flow, while in the Amazonian plain it forms gentle meanders. It joins the Ucayali River near the town of Nauta, where the two rivers merge to form the Amazon.
As it passes through the Pongo de Manseriche, the Marañón River crosses a narrow rocky canyon where navigation is dangerous due to its strong current and sharp rocks, but this section is appreciated for its great scenic beauty.
The Marañón is also known for its important hydroelectric production. Several hydroelectric plants are located on this river due to its high flow rate and the steep slope of its course.
Apurímac River
The Apurímac River stands out for being one of the rivers that is part of the system that ultimately gives rise to the Amazon. From its source between the mountains of Arequipa and Cusco, this river offers spectacular views, surrounded by deep gorges and ravines where the water runs with force.

Rímac River
The Rímac River is one of the most important rivers in central Peru. With its 160-kilometer course, it flows from the Andes Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. It passes through the city of Lima, the country’s capital, making it a vital source of water for the city’s residents and for agriculture. The river’s name comes from Quechua, where Rímac translates as “the one who speaks” or “the talker”According to local legends, it was considered a river that “spoke” to those who consulted it, through priests who served as intermediaries in Inca times.

Mantaro River
Another of the most important rivers in central Peru is the Mantaro River. This river flows through the Junín region for approximately 724 kilometers. The Mantaro is a river of vital economic importance due to its role in the Peruvian hydroelectric system. Furthermore, it sustains the Mantaro Valley, one of the most productive agricultural areas in the country. The Mantaro originates in Lake Junín, on the Bombón Plateau, an extensive Andean plain at over 4,000 meters above sea level. At its mouth in Lake Titicaca, it contributes to the formation of wetlands and marshes that support remarkable biodiversity. Furthermore, this river is important for artisanal fishing and for local communities in both countries. Among the problems facing the Suches River is pollution from mining, as its waters contain a high concentration of heavy metals due to informal mining in the region. Chira River
South of Ecuador and north of Peru we find the Chira river. It is born in the western part of the Andes at more than 3000 meters. Its length is more than 168 kilometers.
